About the Waymo catching fire: any ideas as to why the Waymo 'thought' it was okay to drive over a lit firework (or a lit anything, really) that was sitting in the middle of the road?
The EV battery longevity story was interesting. Seems like batteries get some air only when they either fail or catch fire. That was actually a nice read.
Thanks for the compliment on the battery story! I'm hoping to do more think-segments on interesting tidbits I come across going forward.
I think driving over things is a way harder problem than humans might anticipate. In fact humans often get it wrong as well. We're pretty trained to understand that fireworks are dangerous, but imagine if you've never seen a firework before.
"The canister looks small, like a coke can, it's probably ok to just pass over it, right?"
There are categories of things that driving models are trained on. When you're traveling at speed, it's often not comfortable or practical to try to avoid something in the road every single time. So if the model thinks it's something that's fine to just drive over, it will.
